Static Electricity.... worse than I've ever seen... How to stop it?

My Mom is having some problems. She called me today and says that she can't get rid of this static. Every time she touches anything metal it shocks her. Last week she answered the phone and shorted out the phone, so they had to buy a new one. Now every time that she is shocked or shocks something - she says it is really hurting her. She is using dryer sheets to pick up the phone, but says it is shocking her through the sheet. She has sprayed anti-static spray all over the carpet, furniture, hair, and clothes. This is not helping either. The shocks have began to leave red marks on her fingers, or any part of her body she touches to metal. My suggestion was to put olive oil on to create a "barrier" for her hands at least. This did not work. I am out of ideas and need some advice. She is 52 years old, and has really dry skin/hair. If anyone has ideas on how to stop this I would really appreciate it. It seems to be causing quite a bit of pain for her.

Static electricity is caused by dry air. The drier the air, the more static. You need a humidifier in the home. This will eliminate most, or all, of the static depending on the amount of humidity back in the air.

It's also a great idea to have one for overall health. It'll aid with resporitory problems, skin problems, eyes, nose and so on.
Reply:You need a room or whole house humidifier to return moisture to the air.
Reply:that is because the air is really dry. Get a humidifer and it will moisturize the air, everyone will feel warmer and healthier and it will lessin the static, make sure she wears shoes and not dragging her feet on the floor when she walks. Winter is really bad about dry air.
Reply:The air is so dry and cold here that I've been running a vaporizer in my living room just to put moisture back in the air. Also, I put bowls of water in each of the other rooms for the same reason.
