Are Indians accepted in America yet?

im 19y/o male mixed with east Indian, Italian n a lil white...i live in cleveland, and today i was on the bus speakin on the phone in one of the languages i speak, Gujrati...and people looked at me. these 2 white ladies next to me gamme that, "weirded out" look, n this black guy changed seats away from me. the latina accross from me wasnt bothered...but then again, mainstream america dont accept latinos. i think asians are well liked, but what about us south Asians? i mean, in the american census thing...they classify Indians and Arabics as white...but we aint. in fact, Middle easterns aint like Indians at all. different cultures, languages, physical features, style, religion and overall way of life all are different between Indians and Arabics...but the government classifies us as white?!?! last i checked, my mom got brown skin and black hair...not white skin and blond/red hair. y is this...and r Indians accepted in America yet? like in Cleveland? there aint many Indians in cleveland

Are Indians accepted in America yet?
I would say that it is more difficult in Cleveland than in NYC or Chicago. Why? Because in those cities, you can easily go to portions of the city that have hundreds of indians in restaurants, shops, etc.

Really, it has little to do with skin color but rather speaking your native language in public. I'm sure you have no problem speaking that language in public, but when you're around people who rarely hear that language, it gives the impression that you'd rather be in India than in America. I'm not saying that's your intention, but that is how people perceive it.

And that's not specific to Indian languages, but any other language. Why are illegal immigrants from Mexico such a hot topic now? Because many of them speak Spanish instead of English, so people have a tough time believing that they really want to be American. Everyone (except for native americans) who lives in America now either immigrated and learned our language or their relatives did. So yes, if you speak English in public I think you'll find very few problems regardless of where you go in the U.S., whether it's a large city or small city.

Your counter argument is going to be that everyone should accept whatever language a person decides to speak. I agree, that should be how it is, but that's a perfect world scenario only.

I'm not sure why the gov't classifies you as white, that makes no sense whatsoever. I agree with you on that :)
Reply:I am beginning to feel like telling all those who have a problem with this country and come from somewhere else, if you don't like it here, go home. Simple. Peace.
Reply:There are no easy answers...I'm sorry if you are hurt by things that are said and done...so much is happening in the world that people find themselves not trusting anything that they don't understand...I guess we just all need to pray for that true understanding...Good luck!
Reply:They're racists everywhere and you have to expect it. Before I started dying my hair I was stereotyped as many bad things because I'm a natural redhead and bisexual. Many people are stereotyping other people for physical things that they can't change. Just ignore it. Every race gets it by people. One of the most popular girls in my school is Middle Eastern!
Reply:I live in Cleveland and I have Indian friends here in Cleveland but down south they were very racist to me. I think that many people in Cleveland don't like each other. I'm originally from southern US and the minorities are pretty nice to one another and try to help each other out (except eastern Indians they acted alot like whites, I was surprised to see how much nicer they are here in Cleveland). Where as in Cleveland I've found that everyone stays to themselves and don't converse with anyone.
Reply:there will always be people who will and will not accept you. personally, i have respect for anyone who has respect for me. all minorities experience that same look at one point in their life, but don't get me wrong white people experience that same look from time to time also. just prepare yourself because, unfortunately, there will always be people who judge you before really getting to know you.
Reply:Being dark skinned and speaking something the uneducated would think is "A-rab" Thier first instinct was 'terrorist'. It's gonna take some time to get through this. I wear my feathers in public because a lot of people think we're all gone or only live on reservations.

I accept their 'weird looks' and use it as an opportunity to educate them, and dispel myths. like the one about us all chasing buffalo an livin in tipi's

Good luck, be who you are. Assimilation kills cultures.
Reply:Immigrate to Canada. The majority of people here know the difference between an Indian (from India) and an Arab/Middle-Easterner.
