I have to go for an audition 2moro, but.....?

Its for the stage production of Allo Allo and its set in the world war II and the characters are all german and french and british. Im a dark skinned guy and Ive been thinkin that im gonna waste my time goin 2moro coz all the characters are white I think and giving the time(era) the play is set in. So do u think it;s gonna b a waste or should I just go along and see what happens. The casting director havent seen myself or a picture. Only spoke to her on the phone. What do u think. If u know the british series or hav seen the play the please tell me what u think.

Hi, I directed a production of this play in 2005 and have been in two productions as well as watching the series when it played here. How old are you? There is no reason why you couldn't be selected to play Alberto Bertorelli the Italian Captain. He gets some great lines ( they all do) and it is lots of fun. Although I agree with others who say race shouldn't matter, I would have thought it would be unwise to cast someone who is too dark to play many of the other roles as it is set in Nazi Ocuppied France. You could play one of the Airmen but these are extremely small ( but important roles) in the play.


I say give it a go they can only say no can't they. Unfortunately theatre sometimes has to go with what looks right.

Reply:if they are impressed, they will ike you despite your skin color, and will try to find place for you in the play. even if there isn't a character that fits your description though, they may remember you the next time you audition for them.

Reply:I do not know the show, but does it ever hurt to audition. This is a chance to get up in front of someoe and hone your skills. The majority of people who audition will not get cast, and the majority of auditions you go on will not end in work, take it and use it for your benifit.


And hell you never know, maybe the director is into non-traditional casting and will go for whomever reads the best.

Reply:well... there might be a role their that can be justified by you.. come to think of it... does all of the real life persons who participated in the ww2 white? maybe the production will need for someone who's not white to make the setting all realistic.. and it won't hurt to try..at least you won't regret not coming to the auditions... and why would the casting director invite you for auditions if they're not intrested... and if they really strictly need an all white cast of character they should have specified it before inviting persons to audition... just make the most of it and enjoy....^_^

Reply:Go anyway. Even if they don't use you for this, they may keep you in mind for something else. Audition as much as you can for any part you think you can do. I'm black too and there aren't a lot of roles written for us, so we have to create a place for ourselves. Break a leg!!
Reply:I'll echo what everyone else is telling you: go to the audition. If nothing else, you'll gain valuable experience, and you might be surprised with the results.





Several years ago, I was speaking to a director on the phone; he was casting a show and had a role available. I told him about my background and experience and he said: "Well, you're probably not right for the part." And I said: "You know, you're probably right...but why don't you let me come in and show you my work, and then you'll know for sure." I ended up getting the part.





The moral of the story? Once you get into the audition space, it's up to you, and anything is possible.

Reply:Auditioning is a skill,therefore it is never a waste of time to audition...to hell with them if they dont hire you...allo allo is wanky pommy crap anyway...if you do go you should play it up...real campy...this stuff is almost slapstick.
Reply:I would go! I've had directors tell me that they had darker skinned women play Alice in Alice in Wonderland. Directors like to stray from what the audience is expecting to mix things up! Who wants to see just a regular, bland version of something? So I'd say go and do your best andif you don't get cast you just simply weren't what they were looking for.
